A Christmas Carol - 07/11/2024 07:30 PM

Live on stage and in person, television favourites COLIN BAKER (Doctor Who, The Brothers) and PETER PURVES (Blue Peter, The Office) lead the cast in a new adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Christmas classic.

“He was a tight-fisted hand at the grindstone, Scrooge – a squeezing, grasping, covetous, old sinner!

On Christmas Eve, Ebenezer Scrooge is warned by the ghost of his late partner, Jacob Marley, that he will be visited by three Spirits - Christmas Past, Christmas Present and Christmas Yet To Come. Together they whisk Scrooge to the past and his happy boyhood Christmastimes, to the present to meet Tiny Tim at Bob Cratchit's Christmas feast, and finally to the future and Scrooge’s own miserable grave - all attempting to show him the error of his ways. But will Scrooge wake on Christmas morning a changed man?

Presented by the Crime And Comedy Theatre Company as a radio-play-live-on-stage, our setting is a radio studio, our actors ready as if for a radio broadcast, and our sound effects created live, all combining to transport the audience to Victorian London, for this 180th anniversary production of Dickens’ timeless tale of charity, forgiveness and redemption at Christmas.

Reviews of our latest production, “The Hound Of The Baskervilles”:

”A phenomenal evening at the theatre, I can’t recommend this play enough!” – The Entertainment Views Blog

“A master class in razor-sharp interplay” – Henley Standard

Bishops Stortford Acoustic Club returns with a "Double Headliner" night.

We look forward to two very different female solo performers   >>>   ROMY GENSALE  and KIMBERLEY STOKER

ROMY GENSALE

Romy is a very experienced singer/songwriter/Guitarist.

Her voice is captivating and it has such a sense of emotion that you can feel her singing directly to you.

A true raw, beautiful voice.

“I’ve always been a fan of songwriters who can take a step back from life, really look at it in detail, make sense of it, and then turn that perspective into something beautiful. A modern and feistily independent example of such is Romy Gensale” Helen Robinson - Sounds Magazine

KIMBERLEY STOKER

It will be a real treat to see Kimberley back at Acoustic Club. Her voice is unique. The last time she appeared at the club, her performance was just STUNNING.  Kim's voice has a tremendous range and depth and she accompanies herself superbly on keyboard. Please do not miss this one!!!

In support, we will have a few two song Floorspots.

Classic Horror: Nosferatu with live music by Chris Green - 09/10/2024 07:30 PM
Nosferatu (1922) is arguably the film that gave birth to the horror genre. Notable as the first cinematic interpretation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, its combination of expressionistic acting and unforgettable images render it just as powerful and unsettling today as when it first thrilled cinema goers 100 years ago.

Chris Green’s new score was commissioned by English Heritage for a live outdoor screening of the film at Dracula’s spiritual home of Whitby Abbey. The music is a haunting blend of electronic and acoustic instruments performed live by the composer and, combined with FW Murnau’s iconic images, makes for a genuinely remarkable and unique cinematic experience.

Born into a musical family in Coventry, Chris Green began playing guitar at the age of eight and piano from the age of nine, and plays most things with fretted strings or keys. Largely selftaught, he’s worked in a variety of musical genres including folk, theatre and early music. He’s a regular musician at Shakespeare’s Globe and was also one of the musicians on BBC’s Poldark, appearing in series 1 and 2.

Dom Joly - The Conspiracy Tour - 12/10/2024 07:30 PM

Dom Joly – The Conspiracy Tour

“Just because you’re paranoid, doesn’t mean you’re not being followed!”

Dom Joly has been off travelling the globe again. This time, he’s been looking into some of the strangest and weirdest conspiracy theories in existence.

Now, he’s now set to embark on a rather unique theatre tour, where Dom will be providing a hilarious, fascinating, and slightly anarchic guide to the wacky world of conspiracies.

1. Is the earth flat?

2. Does Finland exist?

3. Did JFK commit suicide?

4. Are Q Anon mentally ill?

5. Is Bill Gates using vaccines to take control of your mind?

6. Is Denver Airport a massive panic room for the Illuminati?

7. Are UFO’s piloted by lizards?

In the spirt of fairness, Dom will also be inviting a well-known and highly respected conspiracy theorist, Dr Julian Northcote, to take the stage and defend the alternate view.

Due to the extremely controversial views aired in the show, security will be at an optimum and audiences are warned that angry demonstrations are very likely – or is that just another conspiracy?!

EXHIBITION ON SCREEN presents Mary Cassatt: Painting the Modern Woman - 17/10/2024 11:00 AM

MARY CASSATT: PAINTING THE MODERN WOMAN

Mary Cassatt: Painting the Modern Woman follows the progression of Cassatt’s work, her meticulous study of the Old Masters and traditional techniques while also exposing her frustration at not finding a style that truly expressed her desire to be modern until she discovered the Impressionists.

This film tells a riveting tale of great social and cultural change at a time when women were fighting for their rights and the language of art was being completely re-written.

Mary Cassatt and her modern women were at the heart of it all.

Mary Cassatt made a career painting the lives of the women around her. Her radical images showed them as intellectual, curious and engaging. This was a major shift in the way women appeared in art.

Directed by Ali Ray (Frida Kahlo) and featuring the world’s most eminent Cassatt curators and scholars (all women), this new feature film MARY CASSATT: PAINTING THE MODERN WOMAN reveals how this classically trained American artist came to join a group of Parisian radicals – the Impressionists – a movement that transformed the history of art.

Nick Stapleton How to Beat Scammers - 22/02/2025 07:30 PM

How to Beat Scammers with Nick Stapleton from BBC’s Scam Interceptors - The live tour

Nick Stapleton is an expert investigative journalist and for over a decade he’s delved into the shadows, unravelling scams, frauds, and unethical practices. Nick has spent much of his career pretending to be somebody else – be it undercover as an employee working inside a dodgy business or posing as a customer on a sting operation.

As the presenter of BBC's BAFTA and multi-award-winning Scam Interceptors, Nick has witnessed the sheer scale of the scam industry. He’s seen behind the curtain, and it's clear, we can't rely solely on authorities or banks to protect us.

In this unique evening, audiences can expect a revealing exploration of the murky world of scams and fraud, as Nick shares some essential strategies to make sure your money stays where it should, in your pocket.

Worryingly, the authorities convicted only 0.1% of fraud cases in Britain last year. With fraud representing over 40% of all crime, it’s never been more important to tool yourself up to fight back against the scammers.

This show isn't just about awareness, it's about action. It's about protecting yourself and your family. Join, Nick Stapleton, on this eye-opening live show that promises to empower and help protect us all.

Don't Miss Out. Together, we can stop the scammers.

NT Live: Prima Facie - 18/09/2024 07:15 PM

National Theatre Live present

the Empire Street Production of
Prima Facie written by Suzie Miller directed by Justin Martin

Jodie Comer’s (Killing Eve) Olivier and Tony Award-winning performance in Suzie Miller’s gripping one-woman play returns to cinemas.

Tessa is a young, brilliant barrister. She has worked her way up from working class origins to be at the top of her game; defending; cross examining and winning. An unexpected event forces her to confront the lines where the patriarchal power of the law, burden of proof and morals diverge.

Prima Facie takes us to the heart of where emotion and experience collide with the rules of the game.

Justin Martin directs this solo tour de force, captured live in 2022 during a sold out run at the Harold Pinter Theatre in London’s West End.

No government gets a green card. No tyrant avoids a take down. No audience member leaves the theatre with an ounce of laughter left in them.

You have been warned.

“So hysterically funny and at the same time so poignant and powerful that calling it stand-up barely does it justice.”

St Mary’s Catholic School A Level Art - 28/07/2024 12:00 AM

South Mill Arts was delighted to welcome teachers and students from St Mary’s Catholic School to the centre last week to exhibit their A Level artwork.

Students Lilly, Kristen, Irene and Abigail joined the Museum staff with teachers Miss Nairn and Mrs Morgan-Wren, to curate an exhibition of the school’s year 13 A-Level work.

The fabulous work represented the best of St Mary’s A level students’ current portfolios and the group worked through the curation process – selecting, mounting and presenting their pictures. On the day the students discussed what it means to curate an exhibition and debated the grouping and position of the work.

The event was part of the museum’s Young Curators scheme; an education and volunteer programme to open the world of curatorship to young people. The initiative is part-funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

Congratulations to all the students for their outstanding work.

Please visit the exhibition on the first floor Art Space at South Mill Arts, open until the end of August – entry is free!

The Arts Society Bishop's Stortford - 10/09/2024 10:40 AM

Lecture: The Imperial Easter Eggs of Carl Fabergé: Before the Revolution by Toby Faber

Between 1885 and 1916, Carl Fabergé made fifty jewelled eggs – Easter presents from Russia’s last two emperors to their wives.  They have become the most famous surviving symbols of the Romanov Empire:  both supreme examples of the jeweller’s art and the vulgar playthings of a decadent court.

Given almost total artistic freedom, Fabergé and his designers had to conform to only three rules:  that each year’s Easter present should be egg-shaped, that it should contain some surprise to amuse or delight its recipient, and that it should be different from any predecessor.

The result was a series of creations demonstrating ingenuity and creativity for which there are few parallels in any other field.  Their styles range from traditional Russian to Art Nouveau, and their materials from carved hardstone to exquisite enamelled gold.  Their maker’s relentless search for novelty also means that they provide a fabulously quirky illustrated history of the decline of the Romanovs.  The lecture is illustrated with pictures of the Romanovs and their palaces, and, of course, with photographs of the eggs themselves.

Lectures start at 10.40 am and coffee/tea is served from 10.00 am - Suggested donation: £7
