April Exhibition: Mike Cook – ‘Illustrations to a story I will never write’

His particular interest lies in varieties and textures of lines and the use of pen, brush, and stylus to give linear expression and design.

His subject matter is usually a moment captured, real or imagined, from his life and travels.

Acoustic Club - 17th Apr - 17/04/2025 08:00 PM

Bishops Stortford Acoustic Club returns with a superb "Double Headliner" night

We have half-hour sets from each of ELLIOT PORTER and JESS BRETT

ELLIOT PORTER

Elliot is a great Acoustic Club favourite.

He is a genuine all-around star performer.

He writes some of the most thoughtful songs you will hear and compliments them with tunes and melodies that are both pleasing on the ear and compliment the words in a way that is unique.

Elliot has a great voice and is a fine guitarist and keyboardist.

He is an all round nice guy and an excellent live performer

JESS BRETT

Jess needs no introduction to those of us who remember her history as the person who ran the Acoustic Club after Annie and Keef stepped down in 2013.

She continued the foundation that Keef and Annie laid down in mixing fantastic headliners whilst encouraging both new and experienced players. However it was as the lead vocalist and bassist with The Huxleys, that Jess made an instant impression as part of this highly professional line up, but often she performed with just her and her guitar. Move forward a few years and recently Jess has found renewed vigour in performing and from her performance last November as one of our 4 lady headliners, she re-emphasised just how great a performer she is.

A little older and wiser, she still performs with the enthusiasm of a new player and is always a delight to listen to.

Sumptious voice, fine guitarist....Superb live performer

In support, we have the following two song Floorspots:

Bill Tarran

Emilia Payne Smith

India Purton (Accompanied by Stuart Purton)

John & Danny McCarthy

RBO: Ballet to Broadway: Wheeldon Works - 22/05/2025 07:15 PM

FOOL’S PARADISE

Luminescent and shimmering, Fool’s Paradise marked the first of Wheeldon’s many collaborations with composer Joby Talbot. It was created in 2007 for Wheeldon’s own company, Morphoses, and first performed in 2012 by The Royal Ballet.

THE TWO OF US

The wistful songs of Joni Mitchell set the scene for the UK premiere of The Two of Us, a duet of deep intimacy and yearning. It was created in 2020 for the Fall for Dance Festival in New York, and had American ballet dancers Sarah Mearns and David Hallberg in its original cast.

US (DUET)

Us is a tender duet danced by two men. It was created in 2017 for BalletBoyz and is set to Keaten Henson’s music.

AN AMERICAN IN PARIS (BALLET)

The Royal Ballet celebrates Wheeldon’s extraordinary success in musical theatre by performing the ballet scene from his Tony Award-winning musical An American in Paris. Set to Gershwin’s jazzy melodies, the musical is inspired by the 1951 film of the same name starring Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron. The musical went on to win four Tony awards. The full musical depicts a blossoming romance between the American G.I. Jerry Mulligan and a French ballerina, Lise Dassin. The ballet excerpt was Wheeldon’s take on one of the most memorable scenes from the film – an extended sequence in which the two central characters dance through Paris.

The Arts Society of Bishop's Stortford | John Singer Sargent: The Private Radical - 10/06/2025 10:40 AM

Our next meeting is on the 10th June at South Mill Arts with coffee from 10 a.m. followed at 10.40 a.m. by our lecture by Gavin Plumley on “John Singer Sargent: The Private Radical”.

Whether drawing duchesses or portraying princes, John Singer Sargent (1856 – 1925) was high society’s leading portraitist. With a consummate technique, his luxurious canvases mirrored his subjects’ wealth. Yet beneath the veneer of works such as Madame X, The Daughters of Edward Darley Boit and Lady Agnew lurks a much rawer world. Sargent certainly scandalised Parisian society with his frank depictions of human sexuality, yet he was even more modern than they might have feared. This talk charts the artists life and his prolific output, showing that, like the era he came to represent, Sargent was always on the cusp of seismic change.

Come and be entertained, enthralled and amazed. Visitors are very welcome for which we invite a donation of £7.

EXHIBITION ON SCREEN EOS ENCORE - Michelangelo: Love & Death - 10/06/2025 02:00 PM

Michelangelo - Love & Death

Directed by David Bickerstaff – Produced by Phil Grabsky

The spectacular sculptures and paintings of Michelangelo seem so familiar to us, but what do we really know about this Renaissance giant? Michelangelo’s genius is evident in everything he touched. Beautiful and diverse works such as the towering statue of David, the moving Pietà in the Papal Basilica of St. Peter and his tour-de-force, the Sistine Chapel ceiling, still leave us breathless today.

Spanning his 88 years, Michelangelo - Love and Death takes a cinematic journey through the print and drawing rooms of Europe through the great chapels and museums of Florence, Rome and the Vatican to seek out a deeper understanding of this legendary figure’s tempestuous life, his relationship with his contemporaries and his incredible legacy.

Through expert commentary, stunning visuals and Michelangelo’s own words, this film takes a fresh look at a master artist whose life and genius are celebrated in every mark he made. Returning to cinemas in 2025 to celebrate this iconic artist’s 550th birthday.

Sculptor, painter, architect, poet, genius - discover why Michelangelo is without a doubt one of the greatest artists of all time.

Japanese Avant-Garde Pioneers - 17/06/2025 11:00 AM

OFFER: Buy tickets to two separate International Film Festival films and get £2 off each film.

Amidst the profound social change and political turmoil of post-war Japan, a bold generation of avant-garde artists emerged in the 1960s, redefining the boundaries of art through experimental photography, graphic design, underground theatre, performance art and radical Butoh dance—forever transforming the global art landscape.

The 1960s era in Japan was a time of profound social change, political unrest and student protests. The turbulent times of the postwar era inspired an artistic explosion in Japan, with the emergence of a revolutionary scene of avant-garde artists who pioneered many disciplines: experimental and erotic photography, “Angura” theatre and underground street performances, apocalyptic Butoh dance, surreal illustrations and seminal graphic design.

A new aesthetic of photography was born: “Are, Bure, Boke” (rough, dark and out of focus), pioneered by Moriyama Daidō and the Provoke magazine photographers. Araki beautied bondage and Hosoe Eikoh sublimated the male body. Ishiuchi Miyako captured her experience of American military bases. Kawada Kikuji’s era-dening photobook The Map captured the poignancy of Hiroshima’s trauma.

Master of underground theatre Terayama Shūji produced countless magical, surreal and vividly colourful lms, plays and photobooks, Yokoo Tadanori and Awazu Kiyoshi revolutionised graphic design with their incandescent theatre posters, Tanaami Keiichi, Japan’s answer to Andy Warhol, developed his unique kaleidoscopic vision of Pop-Art, and Butoh founders Hijikata Tatsumi and Ohno Kazuo impacted modern dance forever with their dance of darkness and light.

Director: Amélie Ravalec

Starring: Araki Nobuyoshi, Moriyama Daid, Hosoe Eikoh, Ishiuchi Miyako, Tanaami Keiichi, Yokoo Tadanori, Mishima Yukio, Hijikata Tatsumi, Ohno Kazuo, Terayama Shji, Tenjō Sajiki, Kawada Kikuji, Neo-Dada Organizers, Hi-Red Center, Awazu Kiyoshi, Kaneko Ryūichi, Hanaga Mitsutoshi, Enomoto Ryoichi, Nakahira Takuma, Tanabe Santaro, Sasame Hiroyuki, Mizohata Toshio, Morishita Takashi, Lena Fritsch, Alexandra Munroe, Lucy Fleming-Brown, Peter Tasker, Master K.

It's a Mystery! - 05/09/2025 07:30 PM

“I suppose you’re wondering why I’ve gathered you all here this evening.”

For those who have ever wondered ‘whodunnit’ and why …

Tim Benzie, the acclaimed creator and host of Solve-Along-A-Murder-She-Wrote returns with his gripping one-man show, a hilarious and fascinating deep dive into the enduring appeal of murder mysteries.

As the clock strikes, the audience will be summoned to the drawing room as Detective Tim Benzie examines the clues that drew him to the genre as a child – from Scooby Doo to Encyclopedia Brown, and from German mystery-puzzle books, to gobbling up the entire works of Agatha Christie as a teenager. Along the way he draws connections between obsessions with detective films, the TV series Murder, She Wrote, his role as Detective Tim for Disney TV and his current Solve-Along show.

Join Tim as he delves into why murder mysteries surge in popularity through times of societal strife – what is there about these stories that ignites the inner detective in us all? And ultimately, what is the mystery we’re all trying to solve?

Funny, touching and showcasing the delight in pop culture minutiae that has made Solve-Along-A-Murder-She-Wrote a cult hit, It’s a Mystery! will appeal to any fans of the genre and anyone who’s ever wondered whodunnit (and why).

★★★★★ “A killer of a show.” West End Best Friend

Beyond the Barricade, the UK’s longest running Musical Theatre Concert Tour, is back for 2025. Join the cast for two hours of the best of Broadway and the West End, featuring the songs that have made audiences return over and over again for more than 25 years. Enjoy numbers from The Phantom of the Opera, Jesus Christ Superstar, West Side Story, The Lion King, Blood Brothers, Miss Saigon, Hamilton and many others, climaxing with a spectacular finale from, of course, Les Misérables!

The concert tour will feature Andy Reiss, David Fawcett, Katie Leeming and Sarah Ryan who have all played principal roles in both the West End and UK Tours of Les Misérables, together with a live band who capture the feel of the original orchestrations of the chosen musicals.

To this day every musical note is still played and sung live – very rare indeed. Beyond the Barricade gives musical theatre songs a bold concert format treatment – but with the conviction and intention to deliver the material as if the audience are watching the original performance.

Sherlock Holmes & The Sign of Four - a radio play live on stage - 27/09/2025 07:30 PM

“When you have eliminated the impossible

then whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth!”

After their hugely successful portrayals as SHERLOCK HOLMES & DOCTOR WATSON in The Hound Of The Baskervilles, COLIN BAKER (Doctor Who, The Brothers) & TERRY MOLLOY (The Archers, Doctor Who) are back on stage in another classic adventure for the world’s only consulting detective!

“What has become of Captain Morstan and why does his daughter now receive a valuable pearl every year from an anonymous benefactor?

What begins as a curious puzzle soon becomes a terrifying murder hunt, with the discovery of a missing fortune, a locked room and the murdered body of Bartholomew Sholto – but who committed these heinous, inexplicable crimes and how do they involve a map of the far-off Agra Fort?

The case of The Sign Of Four stretches all of Sherlock Holmes’ powers of deduction in a mystery that was born in war-torn India and now stalks Victorian London, fuelled by the vengeance of a seemingly unstoppable, cut-throat band.

With the help of the Baker Street Irregulars and Doctor Watson’s new love Mary, can Holmes finally bring the gang’s malicious leader to justice, recover the stolen treasure, and reveal the hideous truth behind the riddle of The Sign Of Four?”

Presented by Crime And Comedy Theatre Company as a radio-play-live-on-stage. Our setting is a radio studio, our actors ready as if for a radio broadcast, and our sound effects created live, all combining to transport the audience to Victorian London, as we bring to life this classic tale from the father of the modern detective story, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Please note, all running times are approximate and all under 16's must be accompanied by an adult.
