The Arts Society Bishop's Stortford - 11/06/2024 10:40 AM

Lecture: The Fate of Art in the Nazi Era by Colin Pink

What was the fate of art after the Nazi rise to power in 1933?  The Nazis are famous for their opposition to modern art, staging the Degenerate Art Exhibition in 1937 that ridiculed modern art and labelled it a Jewish and Bolshevik conspiracy to undermine German identity. Nazi propaganda hinged on creating a potent myth about the German nation and art was a critical weapon in this process.

In this talk Colin will examine the complexities of Nazi art policy and what actually happened to modernist artists during this period. Many modernist artists were forced into exile, some were tortured and imprisoned, others’ sought to reach an accommodation with the authorities, some chose ‘inner immigration’, retreating into a private secluded world to escape persecution.

We will see how Nazi architects combined neo-classical facades with modernist architectural structures. We will also see how, despite closing down the Bauhaus art school, elements of Bauhaus design were utilised by Nazi designers.

Lectures start at 10.40 am and coffee/tea is served from 10.00am

Gail Porter: Hung, Drawn and Portered - 14/06/2024 07:30 PM

Gail has just completed 31 sold out shows at The Edinburgh Fringe and is now taking her hilarious stand up show on tour

"Has anyone here been sectioned?" TV presenter Gail Porter jokily asks her audience. Famed for her vibrancy as well as mental health struggles, she has turned to comedy to take control of her own story.

Comedy is a new venture for Gail. She has just concluded a run of her one-woman show Hung, Drawn and Portered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

The show documents her life experiences and appears to be liberating.

As a lively 25-year-old in the 1990s, she hosted TV programmes including Fully Booked, Top Of The Pops and Wish You Were Here.

But her pathway began to change tack in 1999 when she posed naked for FHM magazine. She was assured the image wouldn't go anywhere, but instead it was projected onto the Houses of Parliament, standing 18m (60ft) high. The first she knew of it was when she heard her name mentioned on the news.

In 2005 she also developed alopecia and her TV career practically ended overnight.

"My head's quite a good shape and I'm quite clumsy and I thought I'm the sort of person that would probably take my wig off in a bar, scratch my head, put it back on, and then everyone in the bar would be traumatized"

But it has also provided her with a wealth of amusing material.

Gail's career has been a rollercoaster and at the moment she's enjoying a rising profile thanks to the comedy.

Meet & Greet starts: 6pm

EXHIBITION ON SCREEN presents Painting the modern garden: Monet to Matisse, 90' - 20/06/2024 11:00 AM

PAINTING THE MODERN GARDEN: Monet to Matisse

Based on the sell-out show at the Royal Academy of Arts, London

Filmed and Directed by David Bickerstaff

Produced by Phil Grabsky

Claude Monet was an avid horticulturist and arguably the most important painter of gardens in the history of art, but he was not alone. Great artists like Van Gogh, Bonnard, Sorolla, Sargent, Pissarro and Matisse all saw the garden as a powerful subject for their art. These great artists, along with many other famous names, feature in an innovative and extensive exhibition from the Royal Academy of Art, London.

From the exhibition walls to the wonder and beauty of artists’ gardens like Giverny and Seebüll, the film takes a magical and widely travelled journey to discover how different contemporaries of Monet built and cultivated modern gardens to explore expressive motifs, abstract color, decorative design and utopian ideas.

Guided by passionate curators, artists and garden enthusiasts, this remarkable collection of Impressionists, Post-Impressionists, and avant-garde artists of the early twentieth century will reveal the rise of the modern garden in popular culture and the public’s enduring facination with gardens today. Long considered spaces for expressing colour, light and atmosphere, the garden has occupied the creative minds of some of the worlds greatest artists. As Monet said, ‘Apart from painting and gardening, I’m no good at anything’.For lovers of art or lovers of gardens, this is an ideal film.

EXHIBITION ON SCREEN presents John Singer Sargent: Fashion and Swagger, 90' - 18/07/2024 11:00 AM

Make 2024 the year of art as you discover some of the greatest artworks all at your local cinema!

Working with top international museums and galleries, Exhibition On Screen create films which offer a cinematic immersion into the world's best-loved art, accompanied by insights from the world's leading historians and arts critics.

JOHN SINGER SARGENT

Directed by David Bickerstaff

John Singer Sargent is known as the greatest portrait artist of his era.  What made his ‘swagger’ portraits remarkable was his power over his sitters, what they wore and how they were presented to the audience. Through interviews with curators, contemporary fashionistas and style influencers, Exhibition on Screen’s film will examine how Sargent’s unique practice has influenced modern art, culture and fashion.

Filmed at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Tate Britain, London, the exhibition reveals Sargent’s power to express distinctive personalities, power dynamics and gender identities during this fascinating period of cultural reinvention. Alongside 50 paintings by Sargent sit stunning items of clothing and accessories worn by his subjects, drawing the audience into the artist’s studio.

Sargent’s sitters were often wealthy, their clothes costly, but what happens when you turn yourself over to the hands of a great artist? The manufacture of public identity is as controversial and contested today as it was at the turn of the 20th century, but somehow Sargent’s work transcends the social noise and captures an alluring truth with each brush stroke.

Step into the glittering world of fashion, scandal and shameless self-promotion that made John Singer Sargent the painter who defined an era.

Explore the unique creative process of the late 19th century’s favourite portrait artist and the way in which his portraits captured the spirit of a vibrant and rapidly changing age.

Classic Horror: Nosferatu with live music by Chris Green - 09/10/2024 07:30 PM
Nosferatu (1922) is arguably the film that gave birth to the horror genre. Notable as the first cinematic interpretation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, its combination of expressionistic acting and unforgettable images render it just as powerful and unsettling today as when it first thrilled cinema goers 100 years ago.

Chris Green’s new score was commissioned by English Heritage for a live outdoor screening of the film at Dracula’s spiritual home of Whitby Abbey. The music is a haunting blend of electronic and acoustic instruments performed live by the composer and, combined with FW Murnau’s iconic images, makes for a genuinely remarkable and unique cinematic experience.

Born into a musical family in Coventry, Chris Green began playing guitar at the age of eight and piano from the age of nine, and plays most things with fretted strings or keys. Largely selftaught, he’s worked in a variety of musical genres including folk, theatre and early music. He’s a regular musician at Shakespeare’s Globe and was also one of the musicians on BBC’s Poldark, appearing in series 1 and 2.

Dom Joly - The Conspiracy Tour - 12/10/2024 07:30 PM

Dom Joly – The Conspiracy Tour

“Just because you’re paranoid, doesn’t mean you’re not being followed!”

Dom Joly has been off travelling the globe again. This time, he’s been looking into some of the strangest and weirdest conspiracy theories in existence.

Now, he’s now set to embark on a rather unique theatre tour, where Dom will be providing a hilarious, fascinating, and slightly anarchic guide to the wacky world of conspiracies.

1. Is the earth flat?

2. Does Finland exist?

3. Did JFK commit suicide?

4. Are Q Anon mentally ill?

5. Is Bill Gates using vaccines to take control of your mind?

6. Is Denver Airport a massive panic room for the Illuminati?

7. Are UFO’s piloted by lizards?

In the spirt of fairness, Dom will also be inviting a well-known and highly respected conspiracy theorist, Dr Julian Northcote, to take the stage and defend the alternate view.

Due to the extremely controversial views aired in the show, security will be at an optimum and audiences are warned that angry demonstrations are very likely – or is that just another conspiracy?!

EXHIBITION ON SCREEN presents Mary Cassatt: Painting the Modern Woman - 17/10/2024 11:00 AM

MARY CASSATT: PAINTING THE MODERN WOMAN

Mary Cassatt: Painting the Modern Woman follows the progression of Cassatt’s work, her meticulous study of the Old Masters and traditional techniques while also exposing her frustration at not finding a style that truly expressed her desire to be modern until she discovered the Impressionists.

This film tells a riveting tale of great social and cultural change at a time when women were fighting for their rights and the language of art was being completely re-written.

Mary Cassatt and her modern women were at the heart of it all.

Mary Cassatt made a career painting the lives of the women around her. Her radical images showed them as intellectual, curious and engaging. This was a major shift in the way women appeared in art.

Directed by Ali Ray (Frida Kahlo) and featuring the world’s most eminent Cassatt curators and scholars (all women), this new feature film MARY CASSATT: PAINTING THE MODERN WOMAN reveals how this classically trained American artist came to join a group of Parisian radicals – the Impressionists – a movement that transformed the history of art.

Running time: 93 mins

Omid Djalili - 06/11/2024 07:30 PM

Omid Djalili: Namaste

The Persian Comedy Powerhouse performs his critically acclaimed new show NAMASTE where Omid peacefully bows to his inner anger and unleashes a torrent of comedic vitriol upon the current state of this dangerously messed up planet.

No government gets a green card. No tyrant avoids a take down. No audience member leaves the theatre with an ounce of laughter left in them.

You have been warned.

“So hysterically funny and at the same time so poignant and powerful that calling it stand-up barely does it justice.”

Michael Levin, Huffington Post.
