A new look for old coins

As part of our preparations for this year’s Roman themed summer holiday we have spent the last few weeks photographing Roman coins in the museum’s collections.  Many years ago, some of the coins had been glued to purple felt display panels (don’t worry, we don’t do that kind of thing anymore) and had been left with felt fibres adhering to them.  We carried out some remedial conservation and were able to remove the fibres and glue residues to expose the preserved coin surface beneath.  As you can see from the before and after pictures of this bronze coin minted by the late 3rd century Emperor Carausius, our time was definitely well spent!
