September ArtSpace Exhibition

Our ArtSpace celebrates the work of creatives within the local community. With several different artists and exhibitions on rotation throughout the year, we display a variety of work and mediums, so there is something for everyone to enjoy

Visit the ArtSpace at South Mill Arts this August to see the work of Julie Arnall and Keith Bird!

Julie Arnall studied MA Fine Art at Wimbledon College of Art, and has worked as a practicing artist and taught in many areas of education, including at the University of the Arts London and Kingston University.

‘I moved to Bishop’s Stortford 13 years ago, and currently teach art classes to adults locally. I run a popular monthly life drawing class at Much Hadham and regular drawing and printmaking classes.

My work has a strong basis in drawing, and my drawings often provide inspiration for  prints which are produced through a variety of traditional printmaking techniques including drypoint, collagraph and monoprint. These intaglio processes have a tactile quality as the line or image literally leaves an indentation in the paper, and for me this provides a link to the senses, and yet contrasts with the static imagery I create.’

A recent series of small watercolour pencil drawings entitled “Crayon Trees”, based on photographs taken locally last autumn, have developed into larger collagraph prints exploring composition and colour and producing a contemporary take on a landscape.

Other print series have used hand-cut stencils and pressed wildflowers to explore colour, building layers of ink through multiple impressions.

Keith Bird is an Essex based, self taught artist who works predominantly in oil paints. Keith covers a diverse range of subject matter from the quirky and humorous to the gritty and industrial.
