I really enjoyed taking part in the Young Curators programme, it has given me a unique opportunity to get hands-on experience with the museum, and an opportunity to get involved with the local community. I would strongly recommend it to any sixth-form student with an interest in history, not only because of the knowledge it gave me, but it is also a great way to make your personal statement or CV stand out.

Our one day a week, programmes run in the Spring and Autumn over seven weeks.
Programme
Over the sessions you will discover how museum professionals care for a whole range of artefacts and share the stories of our history.
As you first come together as a group, we will discuss the purpose of museums and what curators do. You will explore the museum to uncover the history of Stortford and how our museum fulfils its objectives and mission.
Over the next few weeks, you will complete the process for taking in objects and logging them onto our database. You will search our archives for artefacts that interest you and experience first-hand how we store and conserve the items in our collection.
During the second half of the programme we will consider how to create engaging displays and share the stories of our objects. You will critique our cases and discover the range of outreach activities museums can offer.
Finally, you will exhibit an historical artefact and research its history to construct an informative label. You will also nominate and label a contemporary object for our future reminiscence box.
The education programme will give you a unique opportunity to work with museum professionals, develop new skills and shape our exhibits. This will elevate your UCAS application and CV but your involvement doesn’t have to end there.
We welcome Young Curators to complete work experience with us and volunteer to help at our activities. We will invite you to alumni workshops and trips and are always keen to work with you on your ideas for new exhibits and website blogs.

My time at Bishop's Stortford Museum developed my media and history skills. Learning how to create blog posts and effectively brand a website has not only helped my A level media studies but boosted my personal statement.
