“Mandy is an abstract watercolour artist based in the south Cambridgeshire area, but born and raised in Bishops Stortford. She has had a passion for art from a young age and is mostly self-taught. Her style has evolved into a minimalist approach focusing on an open, calm, contemplative mood and atmosphere.

Mandy’s work captures the essence of natural forms through delicate washes of colour and soft textures, reminiscent of the world around us. She is a keen traveller, and often takes inspiration from places she has visited with each piece reflecting the emotional experience of nature and the beauty in landscapes.”
Mandy Lowton is a UK based artist whose work is defined by her expressive use of watercolour and her innovative approach to the medium. Raised in Bishop’s Stortford, she studied Art to A Level at Birchwood High School before moving on to develop her distinctive style through years of exploration and practice.

Now specialising in watercolour on canvas, Mandy works with watercolour ground to prepare her surfaces, allowing her to combine the fluidity and luminosity of watercolour with the texture and scale often associated with acrylic or oil painting. Her paintings often explore the interplay of light, atmosphere, and movement, with subjects ranging from coastal vistas to wide open landscapes. She aims to evoke an emotional response as much as to depict a scene, capturing fleeting moments and subtle shifts in mood.
Mandy’s work is characterised by a balance between control and spontaneity. She embraces the natural flow of pigment and water, while also employing layers and detail to create depth and richness. This dynamic process results in paintings that feel alive, each telling its own story.

Mandy is represented by the Darryl Nantais Gallery, and you can see her paintings in their Auchterarder fine art gallery. Her pieces have been acquired by collectors across the UK and internationally. In addition to her gallery representation, she continues to exhibit in a variety of settings, from curated group shows to solo exhibitions. Mandy’s work will be shown at the 20th anniversary show of the Edinburgh Art Fair between the 18th and 21st of September this year.
Exhibiting at South Mill Arts in Bishop’s Stortford for the month of October holds particular significance for Mandy, marking a return to the town where her creative journey began. While her work now reaches far beyond the place she grew up, her early education and formative years in Stortford remain an important part of her artistic foundation.
