Lorraine Brown – October ArtSpace Exhibition

Lorraine is a Cambridgeshire artist inspired by the textures and stories found in weathered buildings, architecture and the plants and foliage that grow alongside them.

Through layered compositions, she combines paint and mark making with a variety of collage materials, including old book pages, handwritten letters and her own photographic prints. Preferring to work intuitively, her paintings evolve at their own pace and are never preconceived.

‘I’m drawn to the freedom of mixed media, embracing the interplay between abstraction and figurative elements to create depth and intrigue.’

Although Lorraine would have loved to pursue an art career earlier in life, it had always remained as a hobby, alongside other career paths and bringing up a family in Bishops Stortford. During this time she completed an Art Foundation course at Harlow Technical College with the dream of one day taking a degree course in Fine Art. It was only after early retirement due to a major illness that the opportunity to study at Cambridge School of Art (ARU) arose.

Since graduating with an honours degree in 2012, Lorraine has participated in Cambridge Open Studios and exhibited regularly as an elected member of Cambridge Drawing Society as well as many local galleries. For over ten years she worked as a volunteer at Rowan, an Art Centre in Cambridge, assisting learning disabled students in printmaking and mixed media projects.

2016 Lorraine was commissioned by Wetherspoons to create two large artworks for a new premises in Huntingdon. In 2020 three of her artworks were selected for the National ING Discerning Eye Exhibition. Together with numerous successful commissions, Lorraine’s work is held in private collections both at home and abroad.

‘At it’s core, my work is about connection – between self and surroundings, past and present, the seen and unseen. Through my art, I hope to share that connection with others’.
