Replica Model Horse and Carriage and Postcard

This porcelain and wood horse and carriage model was made in the 1990s by a local artisan in New South Wales, Australia, commissioned by Barbara Haynes in memory of her grandfather, Alwyne Barker.
Alwyne Barker was a harness-maker from Lakenheath, born 16th April 1894. Shown in the postcard posing with a horse and carriage he outfitted. The photograph taken in the early 1900s.
Industrial Co-Operative societies were organisations created to share the production, supplying, marketing, and processing of goods and services of their members.
Barbara’s family emigrated to Australia in 1969 and Alwyne’s great granddaughter Wendy contacted us about donating the model. She has memories of visiting Alwyne and his wife Lucy in Lakenheath. They lived in one room and her grandmother slept in a wooden caravan opposite.
We have no information about the Bishop’s Stortford Industrial Co-operative Society so please contact the museum if you can fill in the gaps.
