Ever Ready, Sky Leader, transistor radio
Giles Gear, South Mill Arts Operations Director, has chosen our object of the month for December.
He says:” This piece spoke to me for a couple of reasons. In a previous life, I worked for a group of radio stations in Oxfordshire; since joining South Mill Arts earlier this year, I’ve felt that same creativity, passion and energy flowing through these walls, and I’m excited to see that continue in the years ahead. It also reminds me that while technology may change, our love of audio and storytelling doesn’t – you only have to look at the explosion of popularity in podcasts to see that our desire to fill our ears with stories is here to stay.”
This Ever Ready, Sky Leader, transistor radio is from 1958 and being battery powered, with a carrying strap, is fully portable. It picked up long and medium waves. Long waves are denoted with a triangle and medium waves with a square. These corresponding symbols are located around the tuning dial to help tune into stations on each wave. The Ever Ready Electrical Company became independent of its Americal parent company in 1913 and dominated the UK batter market for much of the 20th century.
