The Young Curator Programme at the museum gave Omar, a Stortford College A level student at the time, the opportunity to explore behind the scenes and learn how museums preserve and present artefacts.  He continued to volunteer at the museum and carried his interest on holiday.

‘Young Curators sparked my interest in the importance to communities of museums and of sharing our history.’ Says Omar. ‘In 2023 I visited Kenya and met John, an archaeologist, at the Nairobi National Museum.  He showed us some local ancient sites and shared his expertise on Kenya’s prehistory. We only got to meet him after lengthy communications, so having experienced these problems I became co-founder of Prehistoric Kenya Tours alongside John’.

The travel business offers immersive, expert-led tours of key prehistoric sites in Kenya, seeking to give tourists, students and academics an understanding of the land where some of the earliest human fossils were discovered.  It has already hosted travellers from the USA and Europe and is forging local partnerships in Nairobi.  Omar has even received requests for internships but starts a degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics at UCL this month. An exhibit about Omar and the tour company is on show at Bishop’s Stortford Museum.
