19th Friday 1991 Big day at Museum for opening of Gilbey Rooms. The usual rush to prepare displays. Wally, Griff, Bert, Derek, etc. erected marque day before – borrowed from Scouts. Tables from Day Centre. Michelle arranged catering – cooking all sausage rolls & vol-a-vents herself. Sandwiches made by member – I made egg mayonnaise sandwiches. Weather just right slightly cloudy but warm.
Mr Walter Gilbey, Monsignor Alfred Newman Gilbey, Molly Gold and Mrs Watney were representatives of the family. Also, there were Stanley Lee, from Barnet (Mr Gilbey’s agent), Mr Rennie (I.D.V) [Independent Distillers and Vintners], Mayor Mike Woods, councillors (district and town), County Archivist Kate Thompson, Ann Pegram, John Kingham, Simon Townsend and many members.
The unveiling took place at 1:30pm after a speech by Mr Gilbey.
Then lots of talk and food. Most guests stayed till about 3pm.
