2027 Call for Artists

The ArtSpace at South Mill Arts is an area on the first floor of the Centre for local artists. The ArtSpace is made up of two large cabinets and hanging wall space.

Submissions for the ArtSpace can be entered by any artist who was born, studied, currently resides or is working in Bishop’s Stortford or the surrounding area. We welcome submissions from professional artists and those who create artwork purely for enjoyment. All forms of media are welcome, including both 2D and 3D works (subject to space and health and safety requirements).

Application Form

To undergo the application and selection process, please send your completed application form to museum@southmillarts.co.uk along with a minimum of three photographed examples of work which best represent the work you intend to exhibit in the ArtSpace.

Our panel of judges and Alex Andrijevic (Heritage and Museum Manager) will blindly judge the selection of work submitted. The Heritage and Museum Manager will make the final selection and has the right to refuse to display work at her discretion. No personal feedback will be provided.

The dimensions of the cabinets are as follows: Cabinet 1 (Glass sides): 96cm (length) x 95cm (width) x 187cm (height), Cabinet 2 (opaque sides): 113cm (length) x 94cm (width) x 187cm (height). The hanging wall space can accommodate works no larger than A1 portrait (59.4cm x 84.1cm) or A0 landscape (84.1cm x 118.9cm).

If you would like to display work within the display cabinets, please provide your own small easels for display. Please be aware that we are unable to mount any work to the back of the display cabinets. Any hanging work must be suitably framed and strung at the back ready for hanging.

The exhibition should be installed between 11am – 3pm on a pre-arranged day Tuesday-Friday during the first week of the month of which you have been allocated. If you are unable to adhere to the dates, please let us know in the ‘additional information’ section below and we will do our best to accommodate. There is a section within the application form for you to provide your preferred months for 2027 out of those available.

The artist is responsible for insuring their work for the duration of the exhibition and for providing a copy of their public liability insurance when requested. All work is submitted at the owner’s risk. South Mill Arts takes no responsibility for loss or damage. Please ensure that your work is suitably protected during the transportation and installation process.

Cost of hire £50 + VAT for two-month period, per artist (shared display of two artists) or £90 + VAT for two-month period (individual artist exhibition)

Details of your contact information must be provided – this is important as all sales of artwork must go directly through the artists themselves. South Mill Arts currently takes no commission on works sold. The museum team at South Mill Arts will number all work using our catalogue template. At least 2 weeks before the exhibition’s installation, please provide a table which details the artwork title, medium, price and an accompanying image.

South Mill Arts is a public venue used and seen by members of the public of all ages. Please consider this as some artwork may not be suitable for this space. We reserve the right to reject artworks which were not submitted as part of the application and selection process.
